POPEYE IS 75 YEARS YOUNG!
And by the way he looks, he must be doing something right. Probably all that spinach and clean living! As one of the most recognizable icons of the 20th century, Popeye has enjoyed popularity for generations. He made his first public appearance on January 17, 1929 in Elzie Segar's comic strip, “Thimble Theatre.” He jumped to the silver screen in Popeye the Sailor, a 1933 Betty Boop cartoon from the Fleischer Studios. The Sailor Man went onto star in nearly 600 Popeye cartoons, produced through the years by the Fleischer Studios, Famous Studios and Hanna Barbera, among others. In 1980, Popeye returned to the big screen in the live action Popeye movie starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall. Never out of the public eye, Popeye's 60th anniversary was celebrated by Ted Turner's Cartoon Network with Popumentary, a series of six prime-time specials.

Popeye's Popeye-ularity continues to grow. In 2004, FOX Broadcasting Company will air a new, animated family special during the Holiday season.

Popeye, his friends, and family are held by King Features Syndicate. T.R. “Rocky” Shepard III, President of King Features Syndicate is proud of his man. “Popeye continues to represent one of the most likeable animated characters of all time. The character's popularity, combined with the highly-sophisticated animation that will bring him to life in the upcoming TV special, will help further Popeye's widespread appeal to both classic and new Popeye fans. We look forward to introducing Popeye to a new generation.”
